On September 24 Slutwalk Johannesburg took to the streets to protest the rape and abuse of women and the patriarchal policing of women's sexuality. Is this going to be a revolutionary movement or just another bourgeois fun annual walk, as some have said it is? Will grassroots South African womens' orgs back the movement? Does this movement address the heterogeneous issues of all women? Is the reclamation of the word 'slut' a privilege afforded to white women only? Will white supporters of the Slutwalk march in informal settlements and townships in solidarity with black women or is this a movement that stays in areas of wealth and privilege? The controversial use of the Slut word has created a conversation on a global scale that the world has never experienced before. It is highlightin...

Women in Africa have long been actors in the quest for the emancipation of this continent, according to Cheryl Hendricks, a professor and Head of the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). She argued that much of the early work on women and conflict has been on revealing women's participation in liberation movements and their associated armies, their work in women's movements to fight for gender equality, their work to counter sexual and gender-based violence and their role in conventional militaries, when she recently delivered her inaugural address at the University. Prof Hendricks address focussed the challenge of the dominant Western narrative of African women being mere victims of conflict or of their confinement to the private sph...
